Cedros
Tourism Boom
The Cedros Tourist Office is proud to announce that visitor count to the Cedros Peninsula
is way up this year. Cedros has some of the longest stretches of pristine beaches in
Trinidad and Tobago and weekend visitors are flocking to the peninsula since the long
overdue reconstruction of the Southern Main Road into the Peninsula is finally completed.
For the past few weeks you couldn't possibly have missed the endless convoys of buses and
maxi taxis heading toward the Cedros Peninsula.
If visitors to the Peninsula are continuing to show up in force as they did over the past
month, we are looking at between 60,000 and 75,000 visitors to Cedros beaches for this
year.
With the introduction of a guest house system and a centrally located Tourist Information
Center in Bonasse, the Cedros Tourist Office is planning to open up the peninsula to
visitors that may want to stay longer than just one day. With the possibility of a $500
airfare to Tobago, Cedros is becoming a very appealing alternative and Cedros residents
are more than ready to accomodate the added visitor influx.
Hotel and resort developments are planned to bring even more visitors to the Cedros
Peninsula. One of the hotel developments will take place in Granville while the other, a
large scale international tourist resort will take place at Columbus Bay. Several major
players in the resort industry will be invited by the Cedros Development Authority to make
bids on the premier 100 acre resort development at Columbus Bay. The Cedros Development
Authority is also hoping that with the development of resorts and hotels, other facilities
such as banks and shopping centers will soon follow.
Cedros has the potential to become a major tourist destination. The Beaches are some of
the safest in the Caribbean because they are very shallow and there are no dangerous
currents to worry about. Local visitors don't have to worry about airport delays and ferry
schedules that could spoil their weekend plans since Cedros is easily accessed by car
being only about one and a half hour away from San Fernando.
Another positive development for Cedros is the fact that it may be the only rural
community in Trinidad where the population numbers are actually on the increase. More and
more Trinidadians and even foreign investors are discovering Cedros as a great place to
live and real estate prices are steadily on the increase in the Peninsula with a steady
influx of people who are trying to get away from crime and traffic congestion, people who
prefer the relaxed lifestyle of the 'Cedrosians' over the hectic lifestyle 'up north'.
